A bit of Woodley history

 +Ali Clifford writes:
Having grown up in the lovely town of Woodley, I am very FOND of its history. One of my favourite things to read as a kid, was the story of the funding of my beloved Primary School on Church Road, I loved picturing the Victorian children, in our big school room, and can still remember the 'bounce' of the wooden benches embedded in the old brickwork of the building.

And of course, if you lived in Woodley in the seventies and eighties, who could forget Maxwells! (check out the classic design of this Ad in the back of the Woodley parish magazine).

Max Steggles - there's a name to bring back memories... I'd love to find out more about him, when did he open Maxwells? I just can't find anything about him, but he was like Royalty in Woodley, a whisper would run through the store if he was visiting! I recall he had a great deal to do with the Woodley Carnival, as did my father Ron Clifford, a tradition the Clifford family have continued since my father's death in 2008.

My investigations will continue - if you know anything or have any stories about Maxwells or Woodley, do let me know!
